Throughout his life Edvard Grieg wrote about 135 musical works, op. 1-74 and EG 101-183. The Grieg Archives holds many of these works and gives a full overview over both our digitized manuscripts and sources of other known material.

The library has digitized almost 6000 letters to and from Edvard Grieg. The collection contains letters from artists such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Ibsen and Bjørnson, as well as politicians, publishers, impressarios, friends and family. Many of the letters are transcribed and available in full text search.

On the 15th of June 1843, Edvard Grieg is born in Bergen. The fourth of five children, he first sees the light of day in house Nr.152 on the lively shopping street of Strandgaten.

In 1906, 10 months before his death, Edvard Grieg added a codicil to his will. In this will he and his wife, Nina, bequeathed his music manuscripts, articles and letters, printed music, books and other material to Bergen Public Library on condition that the library preserves them and makes them accessible to the population.

Og nu inderlig takk for siste gang, for den morsomme bryllupsdag, da jeg ble viet to ganger, og nøt sjokoladen på alteret i all høytidelighet. Vi var jo faktisk for lite sammen, men jeg var bundet til lenker som så tett omsluttet meg at det ville ha vært en umulighet å bryte dem.
