Fuglen filmklubb welcomes you to watch Veiviseren (1987), also known as Ofelaš or Pathfinder, with us. In addition to being the first Sami-language feature film ever, in 1988, Veiviseren was the first Oscar-nominated Norwegian feature film since Nine Lives (1957).

The story of Veiviseren takes place on the Finnmark plateau in the distant past, where a young Sami boy fights for both his own life and the lives of others when he is forced to be a guide for the invading Tsjude people. Veiviseren is based on a Northern Norwegian legend that the film’s Norwegian-Sami director, Nils Gaup, was told by his grandfather. It is also inspired by two other legends.

Please note: The film’s spoken language is Sami, with Norwegian subtitles. The rest of the program will be in English, including the discussion.

Program

· Short presentation of Vesener på Sletten (KODE Kunstsatelitten) by artist Petra Rahm (relevant to our theme for this semester, «Winterspring of Folklore»)

· Short introduction to Veiviseren by media scholar Ingvild Abildgaard Jansen

· Short reading of one of the legends the film is based on

· Questions to think about while watching the film

· Film screening of Veiviseren (runtime: about 86 minutes)

· Open discussion about the film, where you can share your thoughts

· If the weather allows: Art walk at Sletten with Petra Rahm

Fuglen filmklubb, in collaboration with Landås bibliotek, welcomes you to its second film-screening season: Winterspring of Folklore. As winter loosens its grip and spring stirs beneath the surface, we journey into stories of old and new, born of witnessing ice clashing with fire, sea shattering rock, lightning blazing the skies and human hands changing the world.

Across four films, we will explore contemporary visions of folklore and tradition, conflicts of the old ways and the new, and life perspectives of people of the world. We will approach them not as static carvings, but as a living tale that is never the same: a never-ending and ever-shifting story by people, of people. And we invite you to join our exploration.

Please note: Recently, we have started organizing book exhibitions related to film screenings by using materials from public libraries in Bergen and collaborating with local librarians. If you want to learn more, the exhibitions are usually available for viewing at Landås library a week or two before each film screening event. These are “living” exhibitions, which means that we’re inviting you to borrow exhibition materials (books, DVDs, comics, and so on) from the library!

Veiviseren is the film club’s final screening of this semester. We look forward to seeing you next semester!
